A CELEBRATION OF SENTENCE: A journal of prose poetics SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15 PAPERBACKS PLUS 6115 LA VISTA (Dallas, Texas) FREE/DONATION 7:00 P.M. 214-827-4860 Sentence is a recently founded journal edited by former Dallasite Brian Clements. Working with Contributing Editors Maxine Chernoff and Russell Edson, Clements has published some of the best contemporary English-language poetry in the prose form and garnered considerable recognition for his work. Dallas-area writers have been a vitally important part of the success of Sentence. Joe Ahearn, Carol Bardoff, Christopher Soden, Susan Briante, Ann Howells, Dennis Gonzalez, Tia Black, Daryl Scroggins, Rebecca Spears, Chris Murray, John Richards, Kyle Vaughn, Shin Yu Pai, Michael Helsem and Charles Kesler have all had their work published in one of the first four issues of Sentence. Joining Renee Rossi, a student in the low-residency MFA program at Vermont College and a practicing otolaryngologist, will be Susan Briante, who is completing her PhD dissertation for the University of Texas at Austin, and is a faculty member at The University of Texas at Dallas. We will also be featuring Karen X, a veteran performer of the Dallas poetry scene, adjunct instructor of creative writing at Brookhaven College, and founder of the Dharma Broads performance collective. DANCING TONGUE LITERARY CABARET SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11 UNDERMAIN THEATER 3200 MAIN STREET (Dallas, Texas) $10.00 8:00 P.M. Hosted by Tim Cloward and the poetry/performance ensemble Dancing Tongue, this Saturday night cabaret series takes the spoken word, scrambles it with music, performance, movement and video to demonstrate that literature is, indeed, a lively art. Joining high brow sensibilities with low brow aesthetics, each month’s show features some of the most talented, innovative artists in the area. The November show will feature inter-nationally-renowned theater performer Fred Curchack and Dallas’ hottest Jazz bassist Drew Phelps. This cabaret series is an opportunity to mingle in the intimate space of the Undermain Theatre and experience cutting edge entertainment that offers up an intellectual edge with a populist sensibility. CONSPIRACY: High School Writers Reading Their Work THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16 UNDERMAIN THEATER 3200 MAIN STREET (Dallas, Texas) FREE/DONATION 7:00 P.M. In this continuing series, Workspace presents some of the area’s best high school writers. These up-and- coming wordsmiths will share their poetry, fiction, essays and playwriting in a supportive environment which allows them to celebrate their efforts with other like-minded creative youth. ARTIST NIGHT OUT: An Evening of Improvisational Jazz & Poetry SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18 UNDERMAIN THEATER 3200 MAIN STREET (Dallas, Texas) FREE/DONATION 8:00 P.M. Poet Will Richey, with the help of the improvisational stylings of the Cabaret Jazz band FAINT IMAGE, will oversee an evening packed full of open-form poetry. WordSpace is glad to present this successful Artist Night Out event, the acclaimed multi-media series pioneered by Richey and visual artist Solange Mariel, which draws some of the best and most diverse area word artists—slam, hip-hop and performance poets-- in an environment that mixes the visual arts, music and performance into a unique experience. This is where, according to the Dallas Morning News, “Spoken word artists are liberated to perform their most provocative works. Expect a departure from routine, simple verses.” THE POETS OF WORDSPACE SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10 PAPERBACKS PLUS 6115 LA VISTA (Dallas, Texas) FREE/DONATION 7:00 P.M. WordSpace presents a program of some of this area’s finest poets: Jerry Kelly, Martha Heimberg, Sharon Bailey and Tim Cloward. Jeremiah Kelley holds a BA degree from Harvard University. He has published poetry in The Texas Observer as well as a number of little magazines in North Texas, and has forth-coming fiction in Southwest Review. He lives in old East Dallas with his wife, Patty Turner. Martha Heimberg is assistant professor of English at Northwood University in Cedar Hill, Texas, creative writing instructor at Richland College and arts critic for Dallas Weekly. Five-time winner of Dallas Press Club's Katie Award for arts criticism, community affairs and business writing, she has also won the Texas Historic Commission Griffin Award and the Sierra Club Award for writing. Sharon Bailey is a poet who for the last eight years has worked as Director of Education for the Center of Nonprofit Management. She holds an MA from the University of Texas at Dallas and her critical interest has been in the work of Flannery O’Conner, Toni Morrison and Wolfram von Eschenbach. Tim Cloward teaches history and is assistant principal at Yavneh Academy of Dallas. He is the founder of the poetry/ performance troupe Dancing Tongue, and has worked with Poetry Circus and Question Authority, both acclaimed performance poetry ensembles. His work is included in Three Dallas Poets and he holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Dallas.
